Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/NGC 4039) in Corvus

The Antennae Galaxies in the constellation Corvus are a pair of interacting galaxies currently undergoing collision. Over 1.2 billion years ago, the Antennae were two separate galaxies; spiral galaxy NGC 4038 and the larger barred spiral galaxy NGC 4039. In the next 400 million years, their nuclei are expected to merge into a single core.

The Antennae Galaxies illustrate a likely future of the Milky Way when it collides with the Andromeda Galaxy.
